Mobile Giving at CAF
Strategy and design for the next generation of philanthropy
The challenge
The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is one of the UKs largest charities, with an eighty year track record in supporting better philanthropy across the UK.
In April 2010 CAF approached us with a simple observation, and a great big challenge - how could they use the phenomenal growth in smart phone ownership to help activate the next generation of givers?
The approach
At Sidekick we tackle strategic question through practical projects - we build to think.
Our approach to answering this big question focused around a hands-on, human centred process that worked with CAFs current and future customers to design a smart phone centred giving proposition.
We began with some initial qualitative research into the state the mobile giving market. This quickly moved into a series of three large co-design sessions with users to explore different ideas and options around mobile giving.
Between each session we refined the user experience design and user interface concepts, and liaised closely with CAFs technical team to ensure we weren't proposing products they couldn't deliver on.
The outcome
The result was a clear, customer centric giving proposition built around activating the huge base of younger users who want to 'buy good' as an entertainment activity. We called it the 'Charity Shop'.
We then produced detailed user experience designs for the product, and an initial roadmap for roll out.
Since the project CAF have undergone a larger review of their retail proposition, and are now evaluating how to best bring the product to market, either as a joint venture or a new startup.
Other projects
"Sidekick was the ideal partner for us, as they combined deep sector understanding, a truly creative approach and detailed technical know how with a real determination to create something great."
